Showing Up and Building Momentum

I’m not sure what to write about, yet here I am writing something.

This is what I mean.

To start somewhere, and build momentum from there.

I did not know what to write about, so I started with that.

And now I’ve made progress.

I have already written five sentences, and this is the 6th one.

Momentum happens when you start.

Sometimes, it’s okay not to know where you’re going.

But it’s always better to start and find out along the way.

What was once a blank page is now a page filled with text.

Remember that:

  • It’s okay not to be perfect.
  • It’s okay not to have everything figured out.
  • It’s okay to be a beginner.
  • It’s okay to start somewhere.

Starting and showing up

It took me years to learn that taking action consistently would get me far.

To know that even 1, 5, or 10 minutes counts as consistency was a game-changer.

Especially since I find it hard to bring myself to do things.

So I start small by doing something so simple and go from there.

If you’re trying to build a writing habit:

  • Write a word
  • Write one sentence
  • Write for a minute

If you’re trying to capture more content:

  • Take a photo of what you’re doing this second
  • Film yourself daily on your camera or phone, even if it’s for a second

It doesn’t matter what you write.

It doesn’t matter what you film or photograph.

The fact that you showed up, and did something about it counts.

If I had realized this sooner, I would have been much farther than now.

I felt bad and sorry for myself.

For not starting sooner, and not showing up daily.

But instead of dwelling on that realization further, I’ve decided not to do the same to my future self.

Lessons learned

  • The best time to start is now
  • Start with what you know, figure out along the way
  • As soon as you learn something, apply what you’ve learned
  • Not every day has to be 100%. Do what you can as long as you show up.

A reminder

Today’s newsletter:

  • started with a blank page
  • began with me writing “I’m not sure what to write about…”
  • went in the direction of starting somewhere and then showing up daily

This is a tiny proof of what showing up can do.

Whether you know where you’re going or not.

And regardless of how you feel.

A question

For the thing you’re putting off today that you don’t feel like doing, or don’t know where to start…

Can you show up for a minute? 5 minutes? or 10?

If not, it’s a good time to assess what might be stopping you.

Sign up for something you aren’t ready for In early June, I signed up for a half marathon that took place in July 21st. I could barely run 2k straight when I signed up. I also only had exactly under 6 weeks to prepare for it. The plan was to increase my...
